Sharp Aquos R2 Compact, the world’s first smartphone with two notches on the display, has been launched in Japan. While a small circular notch on top of the screen houses front camera, the notch at the bottom is wider and includes a fingerprint sensor. Sharp also released a concept video for Aquos R2 Compact, which will be available in Japan through SoftBank starting in mid-January. Sharp Aquos R2 Compact price has not been made official yet.
Andy Rubin’s Essential PH-1, launched in May 2017, was the first smartphone to sport a notch. However, the feature was popularised by Apple iPhone X and was quickly adopted by more Android smartphones, with Asus Zenfone 5Z being the first. The trend so far has been one notch on a smartphone, typically positioned at the top of the display. Now, Aquos R2 Compact has been launched with two notches. It is unclear if the phone will be announced for global markets as well.
